Attention: Members of Ts'kw'aylaxw First Nation
The Ts'kw'aylaxw Custom Election Code ("the Code") provides that Chief and Council are elected for three-year terms and elections are to occur in March of the final year of their term.
In 2020, the previous Chief and Council changed the election date from March to August 2020 to protect the community from the spread of COVID-19.
The current Chief and Council was advise that the 2023 election would also occur in August to allow for a three-year term.
We have sought legal advise on this issue and learned there was no lawful authority to change the election date. All elections are to occur in March in the final year of the term of office.
Chief and Council does not wish to unlawfully extend their term of office and is following on the legal opinion that the 2023 election will happen as soon as is reasonable and possible. We ask for your patience and understanding as we prepare to hold an election sooner than anticipated.
Further details to be provided with dates for nominations and elections will be out soon.
Sincerely,
Chief Justin Kane,
On behalf of Chief and Council
